Seattle Seahawks General Manager John Schneider Signs Contract Extension Through 2030
Seattle Seahawks General Manager and President of Football Operations, John Schneider, has signed a four-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2030 NFL Draft. At 54, Schneider is entering his second season with head coach Mike Macdonald and is poised to reach the 20-year mark as Seattle’s top personnel executive. Originally hired in 2010 from the Green Bay Packers organization, Schneider played a key role in building a Super Bowl-winning team and orchestrated moves like drafting Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner, and acquiring Marshawn Lynch.
Despite early successes—including 10 playoff appearances and two Super Bowl trips—Seattle has made the postseason only once in the past four seasons. After longtime coach Pete Carroll was replaced in 2023, Schneider also took on the title of president of football operations and began an aggressive roster overhaul. This included trading quarterback Geno Smith and wide receiver D.K. Metcalf, signing quarterback Sam Darnold, and acquiring veteran stars Cooper Kupp and DeMarcus Lawrence. Among current NFL GMs, only Mickey Loomis and Mike Brown have longer active tenures.
In addition to Schneider's extension, the Seahawks have made several notable roster changes. Cornerback Shaquill Griffin has rejoined the team on a one-year contract worth $3 million, with the potential to reach $4 million. Griffin, 29, returns to Seattle after stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers, and Minnesota Vikings. Last season with the Vikings, he recorded 41 tackles, two interceptions, and six passes defended. His return aims to bolster the Seahawks' secondary, providing depth and experience to a young defensive backfield.
The Seahawks have also made significant additions to their roster. Wide receiver Cooper Kupp, formerly of the Los Angeles Rams, signed a three-year, $45 million contract with Seattle. Kupp, 31, is known for his exceptional route running and hands, having led the NFL in receiving yards and touchdowns in previous seasons. His addition is expected to provide a reliable target for quarterback Sam Darnold.
Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, 32, has also joined the Seahawks on a three-year, $32.5 million contract. Lawrence spent 11 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, recording 61.5 sacks and 21 forced fumbles. His leadership and pass-rushing prowess are anticipated to strengthen Seattle's defensive line.
However, the team has faced challenges with injuries. Running back Kenny McIntosh suffered a left leg injury during a practice session, suspected to be a torn ACL. McIntosh, 25, contributed primarily on special teams last season, recording 172 rushing yards and three receptions. The team has yet to provide an official update on his status.
As the Seahawks prepare for the upcoming season, these strategic moves and roster changes reflect the organization's commitment to building a competitive team under the leadership of General Manager John Schneider and Head Coach Mike Macdonald.
